A James City County man is facing charges after police say his dog bit a woman jogging on a trail in Ford’s Colony Jun 7.
Michael Richard Encrapera, 68, was issued a summons for having a dangerous dog June 20 in connection to the incident on June 7, James City County spokesman Deputy Chief Steve Rubino said.
Rubino said the victim, a 45-year-old woman, was jogging with a friend on a Ford’s Colony trail around 6:30 a.m. when they saw the Shepherd-mix up ahead.
The dog was on a leash, but when the two joggers moved to get around the dog, it lunged and bit the woman on the thigh, Rubino said.
The woman sought treatment at the M.D. Express Urgent Care on Monticello Avenue in Williamsburg, Rubino said.
Her injuries were not considered severe, he added.
If Encrapera is convicted of the dangerous dog charge, there could be several potential outcomes, Rubino said. The owner may be required to muzzle the dog while in public, build an enclosure if the dog is kept outside, register the dog as “dangerous,” or post “beware of dog” signs around his property.
Virginia state code does not require the dog to be euthanized if the owner is convicted, Rubino said.
