Half a century of cheese: Power family shares secret of ‘Cheese Shop’ success

After 45 years in business, Cheese Shop and Fat Canary owners Tom and Mary Ellen Power attribute their success to William & Mary students who have staffed their restaurants. This May, the couple was awarded the college’s prestigious Prentis Award, which is given to individuals in Williamsburg for civic involvement and support of the college. Read more here.

‘Swept under the rug:’ Students protest at Warhill over sexual assault concerns

On Thursday morning, over a dozen Warhill High School students in James City County chose to speak out about sexual assault by walking out of school. Citing concerns about the handling of sexual harassment reports, students stood in front of Warhill holding handwritten signs reading “no means no” and “your hands do not belong on my body.” Read more here.

Police: 33-year-old man steals co-worker’s winning lottery ticket

A Newport News man has been charged after police say he stole his coworker’s $780 lottery ticket in July 2016. After a year-long investigation, police arrested William Andre Flood in connection to the incident. Read more here.

Williamsburg man found guilty of biting firefighter’s face, resisting arrest after car rolls into ditch

A Williamsburg man faces up to 36 years in prison after being found guilty of resisting arrest, biting a firefighter’s face and grabbing a police officer’s groin in April 2016. Rydell Pettaway was found guilty of several felonies Tuesday, and will appear in court for sentencing Aug. 9 at 9 a.m. Read more here.

Police: Husband, wife chase man with hammer in fit of road rage

Shannon Waggoner, 41, and his wife, Sharon, 36, are facing charges of aggravated assault following a road rage argument Monday night, according to police. During the argument, Sharon Waggoner allegedly “exited her vehicle armed with a hammer.” Read more here.
