A York County husband and wife are facing charges after they allegedly tried to hit a man with a hammer during a driving-related argument outside a hotel, police said.

An off-duty Williamsburg Police officer witnessed an argument in a hotel parking lot in the 300 block of Page Street around 8:10 p.m. Monday night, according to Williamsburg Police spokesman Maj. Greg Riley.

The officer went to the parking lot and separated the male victim and two alleged assailants, Sharon M. Waggoner, 36, and Shannon Ray Waggoner, 41, Riley said.

The off-duty officer then waited for working officers to arrive on scene.

When officers arrived, they spoke to everyone involved and determined the argument started after “bad behavior” while both parties were driving, Riley said.

“This incident started because one party got upset thinking that the other would not let them pass,” Riley said. “This led to physical gestures and name calling.”

Both vehicles pulled over at the hotel and the three began arguing.

During the argument, the wife, Sharon Waggoner, “exited her vehicle armed with a hammer” and attempted to hit the victim with it, Riley said.

Her husband, Shannon Waggoner, then grabbed the hammer and attempted to strike the victim as well, police said.

The victim was not hit or injured during the incident.

Officers believed Shannon Ray Waggoner was also intoxicated during the incident. He was arrested at the scene for allegedly driving under the influence and taken to the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.

At the jail, he was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, driving under the influence and refusal to take a blood or breath test.

Shannon Waggoner was released on bail, according to online court records.

Sharon Waggoner was arrested the following night, Wednesday, and charged with aggravated assault, Riley said. She was still in custody Wednesday, according to court records.

Both the husband and wife are scheduled to appear in the Williamsburg-James City County General District Court June 13.

CORRECTION: The names of the husband and wife involved in this incident are Shannon Ray Waggoner and Shannon Marie Waggoner.  The information was misreported in an earlier version of this story.
