NORFOLK — A father accused of murdering his four-year-old son at their East Ocean View home this week was arraigned on Friday morning.

Rayvon A. Messer, 26, had tears in his eyes as a Norfolk Juvenile Domestic Relations Court judge set his bond hearing for April 25.

Messer was arrested on Thursday morning and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of his four-year-old son, Rayvon Messer Jr.

Rayvon Jr. was shot around 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday at an apartment located in the 9500 block of 19th Bay Street. When police arrived, they found the boy outside of the house suffering from a gunshot wound, according to Norfolk Police Department spokesman Daniel Hudson.

Rayvon Jr. was rushed to a local hospital, but died shortly after arriving.

Messer has also been charged with use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is currently being held in Norfolk City Jail without bond.

A preliminary hearing has also been set for Messer’s case on July 6.
