Virginia Beach police searching for answers in Ardsley Square shooting

VIRGINIA BEACH — Police are searching for answers in a Virginia Beach shooting that may have injured two people.

Police responded to a shooting in the 6300 block of Ardsley Square around 8:10 p.m. on Feb. 13. When they arrived, they found no victims; however, within 15 minutes of the 911 call, a local hospital reported two victims that were possibly related to the shooting, according to a Virginia Beach Police Department news release.

In a Feb. 14 search warrant, police wrote that a man living in the 6300 block of Blakely Square dropped off a wounded man at Sentara Leigh Hospital on the night of the shooting.

The victim, Tayquan Smith, had been shot in the torso and had to have surgery. He survived his injuries.

The man who took him to the hospital told police that his son, who may have been a witness to the shooting, wasn’t home when Smith came to him and said he’d been shot, court documents state.

Smith asked the man to take him to his car, a 2012 Toyota Camry that was parked on Ardsley Square, so he could get his cell phone. The man took Smith to his car, and then drove him to the hospital.

In a parking lot in the 6300 block of Ardsley Square, police found a black handgun, a cell phone and a black bag. Near Smith’s car they found a small bag of marijuana, according to court documents.

Smith’s car was taken to the Virginia Beach Forensic Unit where it was searched. In the car, police found $215, a glass jar with a brown and green leaf substance inside, a marijuana blunt, a black glock magazine with seven rounds inside and a black firearm holster.

The case is under investigation, said Virginia Beach Master Police Officer Linda Kuehn.
