VIRGINIA BEACH — A former U.S. Navy sailor will spend 35 years in prison for raping and sexually abusing a child several times between August 2014 and April 2016, according to an Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney news release.

John Michael Abbrescia, 28, pleaded guilty Sept. 12. Circuit Court Judge H. Thomas Padrick delivered the sentence Monday.

According to the release, Abbrescia also forced the child to watch pornography.

The child told a school guidance counselor about the abuse, and Abbrescia told the child to lie to investigators when he found out, according to the release.

When detectives interviewed Abbrescia, he confessed to abusing the child and that he was also HIV-positive at the time. Abbrescia’s DNA was found on the child’s bed, box spring and bedroom floor, according to the release.
