A Virginia Beach man was sentenced Monday to 11 years in prison for attempting to hire a hitman to kill his estranged wife last year.

According to court documents, a confidential informant told authorities that Chadwick Stanley Ghesquiere, 38,and his wife were going through a divorce and a custody battle and that Ghesquiere wanted to “get rid of her.”

Ghesquiere hired an undercover special agent to murder his estranged wife in August, according to court documents. Ghesquiere provided the agent with $1,000 cash, 80 Adderall pills and a gun. Ghesquiere also told the undercover agent he would pay him half of his wife’s $100,000 life insurance policy.

On Aug. 18, Ghesquiere was arrested at Naval Air Station Oceana. After his arrest, he confessed to the murder-for-hire scheme.

“Violence is never the answer to ending a relationship,”  Dana Boente, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, said in a release. “Despite Ghesquiere’s best attempts to distance himself, law enforcement agents were able to uncover his murder-for-hire plot and potentially prevent a tragic loss of life.”
