The former chairman of the Williamsburg-James City County School Board was appointed to Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s administration Friday.

Jim Kelly, a member of the School Board since 2010, will fill a position on the Board for Architects, Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Certified Interior Designers and Landscape Architects, according to a Governor’s Office news release.

“I am very humbled that the governor’s office would select me for that position,” Kelly said. “I look forward to working on the board and maintaining the standards, ethics and integrity of professional engineers in the Commonwealth of Virginia.”

Kelly currently represents the Jamestown District on the WJCC School Board and is a licensed professional engineer, working as the Manager of Crane Engineering and Quality at Newport News Shipbuilding.

Kelly, whose term expires at the end of 2017, handed off the chairman role to Board member Kyra Cook on Jan. 3.

According to Kelly, the Board for Architects, Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Certified Interior Designers and Landscape Architects is responsible for reviewing applicants for professional engineering license, making sure they meet the standards for the license.

The Board also handles cases in which an engineer or engineering company, is accused of misconduct. In those situations, the Board is charged with the investigation and any kind of action taken in response to the accusations, Kelly said.

Kelly applied for the position on the Board in December, he said.

“I had been approached a couple times to apply for it,” Kelly said. “Some folks in the engineering community asked me to apply, which I did in December.”

Kelly said he learned of his appointment on Wednesday.

“It’s just an honor to serve and give back to my profession,” he said. “I’m looking forward to my work on the Board.”

Kelly was among nine other people who were appointed to various facets of McAuliffe’s administration, including the Virginia Parole Board; Board for Architects, Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Certified Interior Designers and Landscape Architects; Medical Advisory Board for the Department of Motor Vehicles and the Virginia Freedom of Information Advisory Council, the release said.

According to the release, “the appointees will join McAuliffe’s administration focused on finding common ground with members of both parties on issues that will build a new Virginia economy and create more jobs across the commonwealth.”
