A Newport News man was arrested Tuesday night after police found him driving a vehicle with stolen license plates, police said.
Vincent Bradlee Whitman, 30, is charged with larceny- third offense, driving suspended, defective equipment and a vehicle registration violation, according to Williamsburg Police Department spokesman Maj. Greg Riley.
Around 10 p.m. Tuesday night, police saw a van with a “non-operational” brake light in the parking lot of the 7-11 convenience store at the intersection of Jamestown Road and Route 199, Riley said.
The officer watched as the van crossed over Jamestown Road into another business parking lot, and struck a concrete barrier, Riley said. The van then pulled onto Jamestown Road and drove toward the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry.
The officer stopped the vehicle near Old Colony Lane and discovered the vehicle’s license plates had been stolen from Newport News, Riley said.
Whitman was arrested at the scene and transported to the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.
Whitman was found guilty of grand larceny and petit larceny in the Newport News Circuit Court in 2010, according to online court records.
In Newport News General District Court, Whitman has a history of larceny, weapons and assault charges dating back to 2007, records show.
