Motorist driving Camaro wrong direction on I-64 causes fatal crash

vastatepolicecruiser_2A motorist traveling east in the westbound lanes of I-64 caused a fatal accident at 2:31 a.m. Friday morning.

According to Virginia State Police, a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro entered the westbound lanes of I-64 in New Kent County and continued east into James City County.

The Camaro sideswiped a 2016 Ford Fusion near the 229 mile marker before ricocheting into a 2016 Hino truck.

The driver of the Camaro lost control, ran off the road and struck several trees, which caused the car to catch fire.  The driver was unable to escape the flaming vehicle and died on the scene.

The driver of the Camaro was the only fatality.  The drivers of the Fusion and Hino were unharmed.

Police do not know how the driver of the Camaro entered I-64 in the wrong direction, or if they were under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Troopers are attempting to identify the driver and notify next of kin.
