Expect overnight lane closures on I-64 over next week

I64 wideningTravelers on Interstate 64 can expect to encounter overnight lane closures on the stretch between Jefferson Avenue and Lee Hall over the next week.

From Sunday through Thursday, east- and westbound alternating single-lane closures are scheduled between Jefferson Avenue (Exit 255) and Lee Hall (Exit 247) as early as 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning.

Westbound truck traffic on I-64 now is restricted to the right lane between Jefferson Avenue (Exit 255) and Yorktown Road (Exit 247).

Motorists are advised to be alert to the reduced 55 mph work-zone speed limit in this area, which will remain in effect throughout construction.

One lane will remain open at all times. The work’s progress is dependent upon the weather.

In January, the Virginia Department of Transportation posted 55 mph speed limit signs between Lee Hall (Exit 247) and Jefferson Avenue now that temporary concrete barriers are in place.

The first phase of the widening project – estimated to cost about $122 million – will add one lane and one shoulder in each direction along the 5.6-mile stretch between Jefferson Avenue in Newport News and Route 143 in York County (Exit 247).The first phase of the project is slated for completion in December 2017.

The entire I-64 widening project, which will happen in three phases, will stretch to the second Route 199 interchange in York County (Exit 234).
