Update: The victim in the May 20 train accident has been identified as Kenneth Gene Graham III of Cool Ridge, W.Va.
Original Story: A 25-year-old West Virginia man was struck and killed by a CSX train in the city of Williamsburg early this morning.
City of Williamsburg Police received a call from CSX around 3:12 a.m. about a person being hit by a train in the 700 block of Lafayette Street, northwest of the city government offices and just beyond Harrison Avenue.
When first responders arrived a few minutes later, police found the body of a 25-year-old white man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
After completing a preliminary investigation, police determined the incident appears accidental. Witnesses interviewed by police said the man was crossing the tracks to return to his hotel.
“We don’t think this was a suicide. We don’t think this was a homicide. It’s just an unfortunate accident,” said Maj. Greg Riley.
Police determined the man was a contractor working in the area, but they will not release further information about his identity until next of kin are notified.
CSX spokeswoman Laura Phelps said normal train operations resumed at 8 a.m.
