Single-Lane Closures Continue on I-64 This Week

I64 wideningPaving operations along Interstate 64 will close one lane in each direction this week.

Virginia Department of Transportation crews will be working on the shoulder lanes between Lee Hall (exit 247) and Jefferson Avenue (exit 255).

The single-lane closure begins Sunday on the eastbound route. One lane will close at 11 p.m. and open at 5 a.m.

One lane will close on the westbound route starting Monday. The lane will be closed between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. each day through Friday morning.

One travel lane will remain open at all times, according to a VDOT news release.

The I-64 widening project broke ground in mid-September, and weeknight lane closures have been scheduled for each week since. Daytime lane closures have not yet been scheduled in an effort to minimize the inconvenience to drivers, the release states.

The first phase of the widening project – projected to cost about $122 million – will add one lane and one shoulder in each direction for the 5.6 miles between Jefferson Avenue in Newport News and Route 143 in York County (exit 247).

The first phase slated for completion in December 2017.

The entire I-64 widening, which will happen in three phases, will stretch to the second Route 199 interchange in York County (exit 234).

VDOT maintains a page on its website with updated information on the widening.
