A 50-year-old man listed on James City County’s 2014 most wanted list for taking his mother’s truck without permission and refusing to stop for police pleaded guilty Friday to misdemeanor charges.

Dallas Graves III was sentenced to 255 days in prison with all but 60 days suspended for stealing his mother’s Ford F150 in October.

He has been in custody at Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail since his arrest Jan. 3 and will be credited for time served.

Graves’ mother called police after realizing her truck was missing, and an officer responding to the call saw a vehicle matching the provided description traveling southbound on Chickahominy Road toward Cranston’s Mill Pond Road before turning into the entrance of the Reeds Gate subdivision then making a U-Turn.

Police said Graves drove slowly past the officer’s vehicle with his window partially down and then drove away when the officer called for him to stop.

The officer did not pursue the car once he lost sight of it, Williams said. Instead, officers went to the 3000 block of Chickahominy Road where the call originated and found the Ford pickup unoccupied in the driveway, police said. Graves was not at the house.

He was arrested Jan. 3 and charged with a misdemeanor count of eluding police and a misdemeanor charge of unauthorized use of a vehicle. A misdemeanor count of driving with a suspended license was dropped at the hearing Friday.

Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Michael Gaten said Graves had several prior misdemeanor driving convictions, including DUIs and driving with a suspended license charges.

“The aggravating factor is he’s not supposed to be driving,” Gaten said.

In addition to a 60-day sentence, Graves must pay a $200 fine.
