Freedom Park in James City County now has several new amenities, including a playground, picnic shelters, more parking and additional sidewalks.
The project to improve the park also featured the addition of a raised brick patio behind the park’s Interpretive Center.
The patio features a grill, an outdoor fireplace and picnic tables and is available in conjunction with the center’s meeting room to be rented for standalone events, according to a county news release.
The playground – with swings, slides and a small climbing wall — is nature-themed and is designed for children ages 2 through 12. The larger of the two picnic shelters is next to the playground. It has a grill and picnic tables that can seat up to 50 people.
The shelter is available to rent from March through October for small events.
The smaller picnic shelter is across from the Interpretive Center and includes a grill and two picnic tables.
