A 29-year-old man convicted of possessing marijuana with the intent of distributing it was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years with all but one year suspended.
Steven Jermaine Jones was pulled over March 21 by James City County Police at the entrance to Chisel Run for a broken brake light.
When the officer approached Jones’ Ford Ranger, he smelled a “strong odor of marijuana,” a criminal complaint filed against Jones in Williamsburg-James City County District Court said.
Jones admitted to having the marijuana and allowed the officer to search the car, the complaint states.
The officer found the drug in the backseat of the vehicle along with a digital scale, which he used to weigh the amount of marijuana in Jones’ possession.
Jones told the officer the marijuana was not just for personal use but he sold it and gave it away, according to the complaint. He told the officer he would pick up 4 ounces of the plant once per week, and the batch the officer found had been picked up at about 3 p.m. March 20. He also told the officer he had already sold about half an ounce.
Jones pleaded guilty to the felony distribution charge in December. He was also convicted of distributing marijuana in 2008 and 2014, according to Williamsburg-James City County Circuit Court records.
