York-Poquoson Sheriff J.D. “Danny” Diggs is planning to run for a fifth term in office.
Diggs was first elected Sheriff in 1999 and has thrice run unopposed for the four-year term, helping the office get accredited in 2003, 2007 and 2011.
“Setting standards has helped raise the level of professionalism,” Diggs said in a news release. “I think that the community sees us as a modern law enforcement agency and is well pleased with the services that the Sheriff’s Office provides.”
In 2013, Diggs and the YPSO became active on social media, connecting with citizens on Facebook and Twitter to post mugshots of wanted suspects, news releases on ongoing crimes, county-related announcements and more. The Facebook page now has more than 7,300 likes.
“I think the community has faith in our abilities and trusts us,” he said.
The Poquoson native started his career in 1976 at age 19 as a dispatcher for the Poquoson Police, then joined the York County Sheriff’s Office as a corrections officer in 1977.
He has served as a patrol officer, an investigator and a major and holds a degree in police science. He is a member of the Virginia Sheriffs’ Association, the National Sheriffs’ Association, the FBI National Academy Associates, the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the NRA as well as several local nonprofits including the York-Poquoson Red Cross and the York County Chamber of Commerce.
Diggs now lives in Seaford with his family.
The election will be held Nov. 3 for York and Poquoson citizens.
