Original Post: James City County Police have arrested a 19-year-old man they believe was involved in an armed robbery in Toano on Monday.
Deputy Chief Steve Rubino with the James City County Police Department said Donte Devon Nelson of York County was arrested Tuesday evening in Lafayette Square, a subdivision off Longhill Road.
As of 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nelson had not gone before a magistrate to receive a decision on bond.
Nelson and three others — 18-year-old Dijon Ortez Boyd, 20-year-old Dominnic Lamar Christian and 20-year-old Tysean Laquan Ransome — are accused of robbing two Star Express employees Monday at around 1:30 a.m. and locking them in a freezer.
Boyd and Nelson are alleged to have walked into the gas station and hit one of the employees, a 56-year-old male, across the head with a gun, a police report states. The two then are suspected of taking the man and a 43-year-old employee’s cell phones, keys, a wallet, cigarettes and an undisclosed amount of cash, and locking the employees in the freezer, the news release states.
Court documents show two of the suspects arrested Monday confessed to their involvement in the Toano armed robbery.
After leaving the scene, Boyd is alleged to have run across Barhamsville Road and down Old Stage Road, where he was eventually stopped by police when he reached the parked car in the woods behind the Shell gas station, according to police records.
Christian and Ransome were sitting in the vehicle and were arrested by police, Rubino said.
Boyd was also arrested, and the three were each charged with robbery, two counts of abduction, two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony, conspiracy to commit robbery, and assault and battery. They are currently being held without bond in Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.
Warrants were served against Nelson for the same charge after his arrest Tuesday evening.
Police recovered the stolen items and a .380 pistol from the suspects’ vehicle, which was later found to have been stolen from Newport News.
