A 52-year-old man sustained five stab wounds on Christmas Eve after he refused to give a man who lived with him a cigarette, police said.

Dontey Terrill Palmer, a 28-year-old James City County man, allegedly asked the 52-year-old man for a cigarette and was told “no.”

Palmer is then accused of grabbing a steak knife and swinging at the man with the knife.

Deputy Chief Steve Rubino with the James City County Police Department said the man suffered four stab wounds in the back and one in the neck before running out of the house to escape from Palmer, who chased after him.

Police, called to the scene by someone inside the home, arrived around 4:30 p.m. to the 200 block of Ivy Hill Road in Toano, and the victim was transported to MCV in Richmond for treatment, Rubino said. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Palmer was taken into custody where he was charged with one felony count of aggravated malicious wounding.

Correction: The article has been changed to reflect the suspect asked for the cigarette from the victim, who denied the request.
