A 39-year-old Hampton man accused of killing a 14-year-old after running his car off the road will face a jury in March.

Gary Jerome Turner pleaded not guilty Friday, and his two-day jury trial is scheduled for March 9, according to court records.

Turner is accused of driving a 1997 Ford minivan filled with seven people off John Tyler Highway on Aug. 8, 2011. Police say the minivan rolled several times and struck a dump truck, killing 14-year-old Brashawnta Brooks and injuring the other passengers, which included adults and children ranging in age from two months to 17 years.

He is charged with maiming while driving under the influence, reckless involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence, manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, driving with improper brakes and two counts of child abuse.

He was indicted about nine months after the alleged incident but failed to appear for his hearing.

Police located him in Florida in October when he was pulled over for driving in an HOV lane to avoid a checkpoint, said Stephanie Williams, a spokesperson for the James City County Police Department. He was then extradited to Williamsburg.
