WILLIAMSBURG — Students from across Williamsburg-James City County Schools are taking the stage this weekend for a local production of “Suffs,” the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical about the American women’s suffrage movement.
The production opened Thursday at the Jamestown High School auditorium and continues tonight at 7 p.m., with additional performances Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
WJCC Schools is one of just 12 high school programs nationwide selected to receive a licensing grant to produce “Suffs,” made possible through the Educational Theatre Foundation and Musical Theatre International’s grant program, “The Young Are at the Gates.”
Written by and starring Shaina Taub, “Suffs” tells the story of the U.S. women’s suffrage movement and highlights historical figures including Alice Paul, Carrie Chapman Catt, Ida B. Wells, Mary Church Terrell and Doris Stevens.
About 75 students from Jamestown, Lafayette and Warhill high schools are involved in the production as cast members, crew and pit band musicians.
The production is a collaboration among Jamestown High School Theatre Director J. Harvey Stone, Lafayette High School Theatre Director Suzan McCorry and Warhill High School Theatre Director Jacob Noble, who worked together on the grant application and all aspects of the production, including rehearsals and set design.
Tickets are $15 at the door. Advance tickets are available for $12, plus fees, until 12:30 p.m. on the day of each performance.
A no-bag policy is in effect at the venue. The show is recommended for ages 10 and older, or mature children ages 8 and 9.
