Allegiant Air to Start Service from Richmond to Florida in February

AllegiantAllegiant Air will offer service from Richmond to the Tampa Bay area starting in February.

The airline was offering service from Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport to Orlando until August. An Allegiant spokeswoman said in June the airline was leaving Newport News due to lackluster sales, leaving Roanoke and Greensboro, N.C., as the closest airports offering Allegiant service.

“Allegiant will be the first airline to provide Richmond travelers with non-stop, low-cost service to Tampa Bay, one of our prime leisure destinations,” Jude Bricker, Allegiant Travel Company senior vice president of planning, said in a newsletter from Richmond International Airport. “We are pleased to offer the Richmond community the convenience and value of non-stop flights, bundled with savings on airfare, hotel rooms and car rental reservations.”

Allegiant began offering service in Newport News in November 2011, with four flights a week to Orlando. The service was reduced to twice per week before it was later canceled.

Service to Tampa Bay was offered from Newport News by startup airline PEOPLExpress, however that airline suspended operations and it is unclear when the airline will offer service again.

Fares purchased between now and May 5 will be as low as $55, according to Allegiant’s website.
