Williamsburg, VA 23188

A chimney fire in a timeshare complex of the Powhatan Plantation caused about $85,000 in damages to the attic and roof.
Units from the James City County Fire Department were dispatched to the Powhatan Resort on Lakeside Drive around 9:11 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a call from an employee. Firefighters brought the blaze, which reached the roof in the chimney area, under control around 9:30 p.m., Assistant Fire Chief Miles Pettengell said.
No one was injured during the fire, Pettengell said. Occupants on the first floor evacuated before emergency responders arrived, and there was no one on the second floor at the time.
Heat or embers from the chimney caused the fire, Pettengell said. The chimney was too damaged to determine whether there was a deficiency in the chimney that contributed to the fire.
Units from James City County, Williamsburg Fire Department and York County Fire and Life Safety responded to the fire.
James City County’s units remained on the scene until around 11:40 p.m. to remove debris and check for additional fire damage.
