Whether at a school where American students learn the value of freedom in education, or in the living history museum preserving the first cries of independence, the area marked Veterans Day with thanks for service to the nation.
Ceremonies were held throughout the day at many local schools, as well in Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown and New Town.
One of those participating in Colonial Williamsburg’s annual march down Duke of Gloucester Street was Bill White, who served 35 years with the U.S. Navy. Read more about White’s military career here.
At Norge Elementary School, students sang their praise and made speeches to express appreciation. The assembly began with a parade of military families across the stage, each led by a student carrying an American flag.
“To me, our Armed Forces give us a peaceful and safe place to live. … Without your sacrifice, our country could never be the same,” said Samantha Kaplan, the school’s student council president.
