A 39-year-old woman pulled over for impaired driving was “chatty” as she explained in detail how her mobile meth lab worked to a Virginia State Police officer.

Maryland resident Christie Ann Smith pleaded guilty Tuesday to manufacturing methamphetamine after police stopped her on Interstate 64 East near Great Wolf Lodge in April and discovered she had a portable methamphetamine lab in a compartment of her vehicle.

York-Poquoson Commonwealth’s Attorney Ben Hahn told a circuit court judge Tuesday that Smith was “quite cooperative” and “chatty” with the state trooper after she was pulled over and explained how she cooked the methamphetamine.

Smith gave a “detailed account of the process” to both the state trooper and a first responder, Hahn told WYDaily in a phone interview.

Smith described to the officer the contents of the meth lab, which included two red bottles, coffee filters, Drano drain cleaner, water bottles and Coleman fuel, Hahn said.

She had 114 grams of liquid methamphetamine in the vehicle and admitted to cooking the methamphetamine for personal use, Hahn said.

After explaining how the meth lab worked, she reportedly told the officer “I’m an addict, hon.”

One lane on the interstate was shut down for several hours that night as the York County Division of Fire and Life Safety’s hazmat team attended to and cleared the scene.

Smith has no other criminal history, Hahn said. In entering a plea agreement, one count of driving under the influence of drugs, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, one count of providing a false identity to a law enforcement officer, one count of driving without a valid license and one count of driving on a suspended license were dropped against her.

She will be sentenced in York-Poquoson Circuit Court at 10:30 a.m. Jan 8. Hahn said the prosecution has agreed to ask for a maximum active sentence of two years and five months.
