After a foot pursuit during which a deputy was pushed, a Virginia Beach man was arrested in connection with shoplifting incidents at two stores in the Premium Outlets in James City County.
An employee with True Religion reported a shoplifting at around 3:15 p.m. Saturday. Upon hearing the description over the radio, a deputy with the Williamsburg James City County Sheriff’s Office — working an extra duty shift at the outlets — spotted a man fitting the description of the suspect, later identified as 46-year-old Larry Jodie Adams from Virginia Beach.
As the deputy approached Adams, he became belligerent then ran off, according to the police report filed with the James City County Police Department. When the deputy caught up with him and attempted to take him into custody, she was pushed away and Adams again fled.
The suspect, who had thrown aside a tan bag during the chase, stopped running once other officers joined the pursuit, said Stephanie Williams-Ortery, a police spokesperson. Officers found the suspect had wire cutters, which they believe were used to cut off security tags, as they took him into custody.
In the bag Adams allegedly threw aside, investigators found two pairs of jeans from True Religion valued at $280 total, American Eagle jeans valued at $50 and an American Eagle hat valued at $15.
Adams was positively identified as the man who stole from True Religion earlier in the day, as well as the suspect who took a $250 pair of jeans from the same store June 22.
Adams faces felony charges on one count of possession of burglary tools, concealing merchandise, larceny, grand larceny and assault on law enforcement. He also faces a misdemeanor resisting arrest charge.
His next court appearance is scheduled for 10 a.m. Sept. 26 at the Williamsburg-James City County Courthouse.
