Three months after graduating from high school, the College of William & Mary’s class of 2018 is set to begin their college careers.
For the 10th consecutive year, the college received a record number of applications for its incoming freshman class. Selected from a pool of 14,552, the class of 2018 will consist of 1,521 students.
Of those incoming students, 81 percent graduated in the top 10 percent of their high school classes. The SAT middle 50th percentile is 1270-1470, and the ACT middle 50th percentile is 29-33.
For diversity, 30 percent of the class of 2018 are students of color, 8 percent are first-generation college students, 9 percent are legacies and 8 percent come from countries outside the U.S. In addition, 167 students come to the college as transfer students.
“Selected from a record pool of applicants, we are incredibly excited about this entering class,” Tim Wolfe, interim associate provost for enrollment and dean of admission, said in an email. “The Class of 2018 will be the largest entering class in our history. Additionally, it is a diverse group of students possessing outstanding academic talent. There is no doubt that this class is poised to accomplish great things, and make this university proud.”
William & Mary’s graduate programs will also welcome new students. The art & sciences graduate programs will add 127 new students, the Mason School of Business will welcome 110 students, the School of Education will add 186 and 19 students will undertake graduate work at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. In addition, 220 students will begin legal studies at the Marshall-Wythe School of Law.
Incoming freshmen will move into housing Friday. Undergraduate classes are scheduled to begin Aug. 27.
