A day after warning swimmers to avoid Yorktown beach due to excessive bacteria levels, testing conducted by Peninsula Health District shows the bacteria levels now meet the State Water Quality Standards.
The sampling showing the excess levels was conducted Tuesday, while the sampling showing the safe levels was conducted Wednesday, prompting PHD officials to lift the swimming advisory, according to a PHD news release.
The beach is sampled weekly by PHD officials from May to September to ensure the waters meet the State Water Quality Standards.
Citizens should avoid swimming in water that looks stagnant, muddy or smells unpleasant. They should also prevent contact between broken skin and recreational water, avoid swimming in natural water bodies for several days after a heavy rainfall and avoid swallowing water from rivers, streams and lakes, according to the release.
