A 35-year-old Norfolk man convicted of killing a man in the city and then leaving his body in a burning vehicle on an Interstate 64 offramp in York County will spend the rest of his life in prison.
A Norfolk jury recommended Hassan Harvey spend two life sentences plus an additional 40 years behind bars for his role in the March 2013 slaying of 56-year-old Austin Steven King, a Mac Tools deliveryman.
Norfolk Circuit Court Judge Mary Jane Hall accepted the jury’s recommendation at a hearing Friday, according to Amanda Howie, a spokesperson for the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.
Harvey’s accomplice, 20-year-old Kasey Lynn Rubio, was sentenced in March to 43 years in prison. The two worked together at a garage Harvey owned in Norfolk.
Norfolk CBS affiliate WTKR reported in November that King died after being struck in the head with a hammer at Harvey’s shop in Norfolk. His body was then driven to York County and left in his Mac Tools vehicle, which was set on fire.
Harvey was convicted of felony counts of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery and grand larceny in a November jury trial lasting more than 5 days.
