A 16-year-old boy and a 19-year-old Hampton man are facing charges after they were allegedly found driving a stolen truck containing stolen items and a stolen license plate in York County on Thursday morning.
At about 2:30 a.m. Thursday a resident of the York Crossing subdivision called 911 to report some people rummaging through cars on Solebay Street. Deputies from the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office responded and saw a Chevy Tahoe with five males inside leaving the area, according to a post on the YPSO Facebook page.
The responding deputies ran the Tahoe’s plates through the Department of Motor Vehicle’s database and learned the plates were reported stolen from Portsmouth. They tried to stop the vehicle and were led on a short chase before the Tahoe stopped on Oriana Road near the reservoir.
Four of the five occupants of the Tahoe fled on foot. The 16-year-old Hampton boy was taken into custody at the Tahoe, which deputies learned was stolen from the city of Hampton a few days earlier. A handgun reported stolen from Virginia Beach in 2013 and a purse reported stolen from York Crossing were also found in the Tahoe.
At 8:15 a.m. Thursday, deputies saw a shoeless man walking through a marshy area near George Washington Memorial Highway (Route 17) near the Harwood Mills Reservoir spillway. A pair of shoes found in a backpack near the stopped Tahoe were determined to belong to the man later identified as Jahlil Payne.
Payne and the boy face several larceny and possession of stolen property charges, however specific charges will not be known until investigators finish working the case, said YPSO Lt. Dennis Ivey.
Investigators have identified two of the other people believed to have been in the Tahoe — both juveniles — and are working to charge them. They are still working to identify the fifth person in the vehicle.
