Two men are in custody after they allegedly stole items from several vehicles in Yorktown early May 23 before fleeing from deputies in a short pursuit.
Deputies from the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office responded at 3:53 a.m. May 23 to a report of people trying to get inside vehicles in the area of Church and Read streets. They found a silver Jeep Cherokee and attempted to talk to the people inside the vehicle, but were unable to do so as the vehicle fled the area, according to YPSO Lt. Dennis Ivey.
Ivey said a short pursuit ensued. It ended at the dead end of Main Street, where the driver of the vehicle got out and ran away. Deputies then arrested the passenger of the Jeep, 30-year-old Isle of Wight County man Joel Gregory Smith. A short time later they found 33-year-old York County resident Jonathan Rudolph D’Angelo and arrested him.
An investigation determined D’Angelo and Smith stole items from several vehicles, including a GPS unit, sunglasses, a nail gun and several other items, Ivey said. He did not say how the men were able to get inside the vehicles. Nobody was hurt during the pursuit.
Smith was charged with four misdemeanor counts of tampering with a vehicle, two misdemeanor counts of petit larceny and two felony counts of grand larceny. D’Angelo was charged with two misdemeanor counts of petit larceny, three misdemeanor counts of tampering with a vehicle, two felony counts of grand larceny, one felony count of eluding police and one count of driving with a suspended license.
Both men are scheduled to appear in court at 10 a.m. July 16.
