The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry will run at a reduced capacity from now through mid-May as its largest ship undergoes a mandatory hull inspection and repairs.
The “Pocahontas,” which can carry 70 vehicles, has been placed in a shipyard for the duration of the work. The “Surry” and “Williamsburg,” which can carry 50 vehicles each, and the “Virginia,” which can carry up to 28 vehicles, remain in service, according to a news release from the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The sidelining of the “Pocahontas” means motorists will experience delays and should consider using alternate routes like the Benjamin Harrison Bridge, the James River Bridge or the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel.
The Pocahontas, which was built in 1995, is the newest ship in the Jamestown-Scotland fleet. The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry links Jamestown Road (Route 31) in James City County with the unincorporated township of Scotland on the other side of the James River in Surry County.
