The makeup of Williamsburg’s City Council is likely to remain the same for the next two years.
Councilmen Douglas Pons and D. Scott Foster have filed for re-election, and no challengers submitted paperwork to run against them before the March 4 deadline.
City Council members serve four-year terms, with a portion of the board up for re-election every two years. Pons and Foster, both elected for the first time in 2010, are seeking a second term. The election is scheduled for May 6.
The slate of candidates for this year’s election is a far cry from the five who vied for the two seats in 2010. Foster and Pons were the top two vote-getters against one-term councilman Bobby Braxton, Planning Commissioner Sean Driscoll, and the College of William & Mary’s student health center physician Dr. David Dafashy.
While Foster sailed to victory in 2010 with much support from students at W&M, where he was an undergraduate at the time and is now a law student nearing graduation, Pons earned his seat with a tight 17-vote advantage.
The terms for Mayor Clyde Haulman, Vice Mayor Paul Freiling and Councilwoman Judith Knudson end in June 2016.
Every two years, the council appoints one among them to serve as mayor. The vice mayor is also appointed. Council will choose a new mayor and vice mayor this July. Haulman and Freiling have served as mayor and vice mayor since 2010.
