Warhill Student Dies After Sunday Car Accident

Warhill HighA 17-year-old Warhill High School student died Sunday in a car accident on News Road.

A preliminary investigation by the James City County Police Department revealed 17-year-old “Case” Hendrik Kees Van Leliveld of James City County was traveling west on News Road near Centerville Road when for some unknown reason his 2008 Volkswagen Jetta drifted off the roadway onto the right shoulder. Van Leliveld then overcorrected, swerving back onto the road and across the center line, where he struck a 2007 Toyota Rav4 head on, according to a news release from the James City County Police Department.

Van Leliveld was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was flown by helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he died from his injuries. The driver of the Rav4, a 39-year-old James City County woman, was taken by ambulance to Riverside Regional Hospital in Newport News for non life-threatening injuries. She was wearing her seat belt.

Speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash, according to the release. The road was closed for four hours while the investigation was underway. The crash remains under investigation.
