The College of William and Mary ranked number four among the best-value public colleges in a list released by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Wednesday.
The ranking came from a list the magazine released of the “100 Best Values in Public Colleges” in the nation. Admission rate, student-faculty ratio, graduation rate, financial aid programs and average debt at graduation are among the factors Kiplinger’s looks at to determine the schools that “combine outstanding education with economic value.”
“The college landscape today is very different – tuition increases and student debt dominate the national conversation surrounding higher education,” Kiplinger’s editor Janet Bodnar said in a release. “This year’s top 100 schools have made admirable strides to maintain academic integrity and standards while meeting the financial needs of their students.”
Kiplinger’s shows W&M has an admission rate of 32 percent, a 4-year graduation rate of 83 percent, a total cost per year for in-state students of $23,415 and a cost after need-based financial aid of $5,070 per year.
This year marks the fourth in a row W&M ranks number four on the list.
Kiplinger’s simultaneously released a second list detailing the “Best College Values for Out-of-State Students.” The College of William and Mary came in sixth on that list.
Christopher Newport made the ranks for the second year in a row at 86 for in-state students and 56 for out-of-state students. University of Virginia was number two for both in-state and out-of-state rankings, James Madison came in at 22 for in-state and 29 for out-of-state, Virginia Tech was ranked 27 and 31, University of Mary Washington came in at 61 in both rankings and George Mason was ranked 72 and 90.
