Following the same pattern as the second quarter of this year, James City and York counties’ unemployment rates came up below the state and national average in the third quarter; the City of Williamsburg’s was higher.
For the month of July, the state unemployment rate was 5.8 percent, while the nation’s was at 7.7 percent. James City County’s unemployment rate was a 4.8 percent — meaning 1,743 people out of 36,226 were unemployed. In York County, 1,764 people out of 34,869 were unemployed, for an unemployment rate of 5.1 percent. The City of Williamsburg had an unemployment rate of 12.6 percent; a total of 814 out of 6,486 people were unemployed.
In August, Virginia had a 5.5 percent unemployment rate while the country had a rate of 7.3 percent. In James City County, 1,639 people out of 35,780 were unemployed for a rate of 4.6 percent. York County’s unemployment rate was 4.8 percent, with 1,650 people out of 34,427 unemployed. The City of Williamsburg’s unemployment rate was 11.3 percent, for a total of 718 out of 6,334 people unemployed.
September had the lowest unemployment rates all around. The state unemployment rate was 5.3 percent; the country’s was 7 percent. In James City County, 1,585 people out of 35,426, were unemployed for a rate of 4.5 percent. York County had 1,607 people unemployed out of 34,096; its total unemployment rate was 4.7 percent. The City of Williamsburg’s unemployment rate was 10.6 percent, from a total of 657 people unemployed out of 6,223.
Looking at averages for the third quarter, James City County had an average unemployment rate of 4.63 percent, an increase over the second quarter average of 4.57 percent, but lower than the first quarter average of 5.13 percent. York County had an average of 4.87 percent unemployed, up from its second quarter average of 4.67 percent, but down from the first quarter average of 4.93 percent. The City of Williamsburg had an average of 11.5 percent unemployed, down from both its first and second quarter averages, which were 11.53 percent and 13.57 percent, respectively.
Virginia’s unemployment rate was the 13th lowest in the country in July and August and was 12th lowest in September.
Out of 134 places, James City County was tied for 12th for a low September rate, with York County ringing in at 22nd; the City of Williamsburg was the third highest in the state at 132nd place. In August, the City of Williamsburg was the second highest in the state, James City County was tied for 11th lowest and York County was in 22nd place. In July, James City County was tied for ninth lowest, York County came in 20th and the City of Williamsburg was the fourth highest in the state.
