York Deputies Find 3-Week-Old Baby Alone in Lackey Apartment

YorK Sheriff PatchA York County woman was arrested on Halloween on a felony child abuse charge after deputies found her 3-week-old baby alone in a car seat on the floor of a Lackey apartment.

Lt. Dennis Ivey of the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s office said deputies responded to a apartment on the 2000 block of Old Williamsburg Road for a reported larceny. When they arrived, they saw the front door of a different unit was ajar with the car seat in view. The deputies yelled out several times but nobody responded.

They entered the house where they saw the infant asleep in the car seat. The infant was unharmed. Ivey said the residence was in disarray, with sharp objects, including thumb tacks, all over the floor. The deputies explored the residence and found nobody else there.

No charges have been filed in the larceny case as the person who called in the report did not want to press charges.

Ivey said deputies then contacted Child Protective Services. The mother of the baby, 37-year-old Melody C. Vergara, has been charged with one felony count of child abuse and neglect.
