wmsbrgnotebook2

Mark your calendar for the upcoming election and head over to the police department to dispose of your old prescriptions. Leaf collection starts next month and Williamsburg is now the first official bike-friendly city in Hampton Roads. It’s all in this week’s Williamsburg Notebook. Read on for more.

Drug Disposal

The Williamsburg Police Department is manning a disposal site for the National Take Back Initiative from the Drug Enforcement Agency. Community members can bring their old medications of all types to the Williamsburg Police Department at 425 Armistead Ave. where officers will be on hand to safely dispose of them for free.

A news release from the Williamsburg Police Department said the purpose of the program is to “provide the public with an environmentally safe way to dispose of potentially dangerous, unused and unwanted prescription medications.”

Police, in cooperation with Eggleston Services, also coordinated a document shredding event to take place with the drug disposal program.

Police ask that any liquids brought in be in a sealed container and that sharps and needles be left at home. Those interested in finding out more can visit justice.gov/dea.

Williamsburg is Officially Bicycle-friendly

On Tuesday, the League of American Bicyclists announced the newest communities to be awarded with the Bicycle Friendly Community awards. Williamsburg was on that list – the first community in Hampton Road to receive the award.

The award means, according to a release from the city, that the League recognizes Williamsburg’s “commitment to improving conditions for bicycling through investment in bicycling promotion, education programs, infrastructure and pro-bicycling policies.”

Williamsburg is one of 8 cities in the state to be considered a bicycle-friendly community. Click here to read the full story.

Annual Leaf Collection

The city will begin its annual Leaf Collection program Nov. 4. Leaves will be vacuumed and turned into mulch that the Landscaping Department will use. Click here for the schedule and instructions.

The city is divided into two routes for collection: red and blue. To find out which you’re on and when you’re scheduled for pickup, download this printable schedule.
