A James City County man who drowned in the York River over the weekend weekend will be honored at a service of remembrance 2 p.m. today at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Williamsburg.
Michael Patrick Colón, a 41-year-old father of three sons, was wading through chest-deep water in the York River around 4:30 p.m. Sunday when the current shifted and swept him into the water. He had been boating near York River State Park with two friends who watched him get pulled under. They told authorities he did not come back up.
His body was recovered in waters in King and Queen County around 9 a.m. Monday by marine police officers from the Virginia Marine Resources Commission. A VMRC spokesperson said Tuesday that “all preliminary evidence at this point suggests that this was a tragic drowning.”
Colón worked as a diesel technician at Carter Caterpillar Company in James City County and was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, according to his obituary on the Nelsen Funeral Home website.
He is survived by his wife, Felisha E. Colón, and three sons — Gianni and Emmanuel of Williamsburg and Timothy of Pennsylvania.
