Surry Siren Test Scheduled for Wednesday

A test of the emergency alert siren system around the Surry Power Station will occur around 11:10 a.m. Wednesday.

A steady three-minute tone will be sounded by 71 sirens in Williamsburg, Newport News and the counties of Surry, James City, York and Isle of Wight.

In the event of an actual emergency at Surry Power Station, the alert system will sound for three-minute sounds separated by one-minute silent periods. The total time for emergency notification is 15 minutes. Local radio and TV stations will broadcast emergency information and additional information can be found in the information calendar, which is mailed to households in the region, and on the Dominion Power website.

Siren tests take place on the second Wednesdays of March, June, September and December. The Virginia Department of Emergency Management, Dominion and the localities where the sirens are located participate in the quarterly tests.

The next test of the Surry siren system will be Sept. 11.
