A Chesapeake woman was arrested May 8 after investigators determined she had stolen thousands of dollars in cash, checks and several items from a roommate in York County when she was moving out.
Deputy Mike Russell of the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Department said 32-year-old Jennifer L. Gibson drained money from the victim’s account using the stolen checks, which she forged and then passed off as legitimate. The acts of stealing a check, forging it and then passing it off each constitute a felony, so the alleged crimes have Gibson facing 32 felony charges.
Gibson also allegedly stole a video game system and some games. Russell said it’s unknown if anything has been recovered.
She is facing charges of grand larceny, larceny or theft—third or subsequent offense, forging and uttering.
The forging and uttering charges carry a maximum of 10 years in the penitentiary for each charge. The maximum punishment for grand larceny is 20 years, while the larceny or theft—third or subsequent offense charges are punishable by up to 5 years in the penitentiary.
