The James City County and City of Williamsburg Police, along with the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, are encouraging citizens to turn in their unused prescription medications as part of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.
The initiative asks residents to surrender pharmaceutical control substances to help reduce substance abuse. Prescriptions and over-the-counter solid dosage medications will be accepted. Intra-venous solutions, injectables, and needles will not be accepted, nor will illegal drugs.
“Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are increasing at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs,” according to a news release from James City County. “Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.”
All three departments will be running the program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. James City County residents should turn in their prescriptions to the James City County Recreation Center at 5301 Longhill Road, York County residents to the DARE Office at 5338 D George Washington Memorial Highway, and City of Williamsburg residents to the Williamsburg Police Department at 425 Armistead Avenue.
