A Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail inmate was hospitalized Monday after another inmate allegedly assaulted him.
A 48-year-old inmate was putting away his breakfast tray when Grant Jacob Possich came up behind him, according to a James City County Police report. When the victim turned around, Possich allegedly hit him in the face with a plastic cup. He is then accused of repeatedly hit the victim with the cup and with his fists, said Maj. Stephen Rubino of the James City County Police Department.
The victim was taken to Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center for treatment. He suffered multiple lacerations and bruising and swelling to the face, head and eyes.
Rubino said Possich accused the victim of talking about him within the jail. Possich was charged with malicious wounding.
Possich is currently serving a one year, five month sentence for selling or distributing drugs. He is due to be sentenced in May for eluding police and driving with a suspended license. He will go before Williamsburg-James City County District Court for the malicious wounding charge at 2 p.m. June 18.
