VDOT to Perform Maintenance on James River Bridge This Weekend

Crews from the Virginia Department of Transportation will perform maintenance on the southbound lanes of the Route 17 James River Bridge this weekend and next.

Single lane closures are forecast for both north- and southbound traffic beginning 9 p.m. today. They will continue through 5 a.m. Monday, according to a news release from VDOT.

A crossover traffic pattern will allow traffic to continue to flow in both directions while crews work to replace the two standby diesel generators on the bridge. Motorists should anticipate delays and consider using the I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel as an alternate route.

The Route 17 James River Bridge Generator Replacement Project involves replacing the generators. The generators serve as an emergency backup to operate the lift span in the event of a power failure.

Motorists should call 511 or the Traffic Information Line at 757-361-3016 for more information. You can also visit VDOT’s traffic page by clicking here, or listen to Highway Advisory Radio at 1680 AM.
