A man arrested in November for leading police on a high-speed chase along Route 199 and Monticello Avenue appeared in Williamsburg-James City County District Court on Tuesday where he waived his preliminary hearing and had the misdemeanor charges filed against him dropped.
Steven James Slater’s case will go before a grand jury March 20 where they will decide whether to advance the felony charge he still faces, evade and elude.
The rest of the charges Slater was facing were misdemeanors, including passing without view of oncoming traffic, speeding in excess of 80 mph, driving without a license endorsement, a pair of other improper passing charges and an improper backing, stopping, turning charge.
Slater was driving his 1996 Yamaha motorcycle at speeds in excess of 100 mph and weaving through traffic and passing on the shoulder along the southbound lanes of Route 199 around 1:20 p.m. Nov. 16, said Maj. Stephen Rubino of the James City County Police Department. Slater did not stop when an officer began pursuit, then eventually crashed into a ditch near Green Springs Plantation.
