A 23-year-old Williamsburg man was in state police custody Tuesday afternoon following a traffic stop that turned into much more.
State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya said State Trooper K. Hughes attempted to stop a 2010 Toyota SUV around 4:15 p.m. for an HOV lane violation on westbound Interstate 64. The driver, identified as Ravi Marquise Banks, failed to pull over and led the trooper to the Farm Fresh parking lot off the Hampton Roads Center Parkway in Hampton, Anaya said.
Banks then ran from his vehicle toward Thomas Nelson Community College, where he barricaded himself in an audio visual room until troopers removed him, Anaya said. She added there were no students in the room and there was never a hostage situation.
Banks has been charged with the HOV violation, speeding, felony pursuit, obstruction of justice, possession of marijuana and driving while revoked-third offense.
