VDOT to Perform Maintenance on Coleman Bridge Sunday; Expect Delays

Maintenance crews from the Virginia Department of Transportation will be working Sunday on the Coleman Bridge. VDOT anticipates single-lane closures from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. in addition to two full traffic stops southbound for up to 45 minutes to allow crews to reposition equipment.

The crews will be performing electrical-mechanical work on the bridge. The bridge will remain fully operational during the work, but the two closures and the single-lane closure are necessary to ensure the crews can perform their duty, according to a press release from VDOT.

Additional lane closures and traffic stops are planned for March 17, May 5 and June 16. Visit VDOT’s traffic website by clicking here, tune into the Highway Advisory Radio at 1680 AM or call the traffic line at 757-361-3016 for current traffic and travel information.

The Coleman Bridge was originally constructed in 1952 as a two-lane bridge designed to carry up to 15,000 vehicles per day. In 1995 it was expanded to four lanes to handle increased traffic. Almost one million vehicles cross the bridge each month, according to VDOT’s website.
