Snowfall is Enough to Force Closures, Cancellations

Snow fell Friday afternoon, prompting the cancellations of activities throughout the region. High school juniors and seniors poised to take the SAT Saturday morning were alerted late Friday the exam would have to be rescheduled.

CITY, COUNTY CLOSINGS

James City County

Freedom Park – Due to the icy conditions in Freedom Park, the facility will be closed today, Jan. 26. Because of the closure, no Convenience Center coupons will be sold at the site today. Convenience Center coupons can be purchased at the
James City County Recreation Center, 5301 Longhill Rd. today until 6 p.m. and tomorrow from 1-6 p.m. Coupons are also available online at www.jamescitycountyva.gov/epayment.

County emergency officials urge residents to monitor local media for the latest updates. County closings and weather-related information will be posted on the County website, Cox Cable Channel 48, www.facebook.com/jamescitycounty, www.twitter.com/jamescitycounty and the County’s emergency hotline, 757-875-2424.

County residents can sign up to receive important emergency alerts, notifications and updates on their cell phones, emails and more at www.JCCAlert.org. Text messages charges may apply.

Williamsburg Regional Library – All locations will open Saturday at noon.

City of Williamsburg
Quarterpath Recreation Center will  open at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26.

Activity Information:

  • Youth Basketball Practices are canceled on January 25th & 26th for all locations.
  • Middle School/Freshman Tennis Play has been canceled for Friday, January 25th and rescheduled for Sunday, January 27th from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Kiwanis Tennis Courts.
  • Williamsburg Volleyball Club practices are canceled on January 25th for all locations. Please contact your coach in reference to Saturday’s practices.
  • Adult Basketball Practices scheduled for January 26th will be held as scheduled at the Quarterpath Recreation Center.

Williamsburg Regional Library – All locations will open Saturday at noon.

York County

The following roads did not have trash pickup Friday: Old York-Hampton Highway, Cannon Road and Cook Road. These streets will be serviced Saturday.

SCHOOLS

Hampton Roads Academy

The MS production of the Little Mermaid scheduled for today (Saturday) is still on. An additional performance may be added. Parents should contnue to monitor the school closing hotline and all local TV and radio stations for any further updates.

Thomas Nelson Community College
TNCC officials plan to operate all locations on a regular schedule on Saturday, Jan. 26. Please check www.tncc.edu for updated information.

Friday’s 8 p.m. performance by the Poquoson Island Players of “The Fox on the Fairway” at the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium on TNCC’s Hampton campus was canceled. For updated information about Saturday and Sunday performances, please call 881-9797 or 825-2779.

Walsingham Academy
All athletic events scheduled for today, Friday, Jan. 25 are canceled.

Williamsburg Christian Academy
The WCA boys JV and boys varsity basketball games at home Friday (Jan. 25) have been rescheduled for Mon., Feb. 4 at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively.

The girls varsity basketball away game vs. Miller School on Friday (Jan. 25) has been rescheduled for Sat., Feb. 9 at 5 p.m.

Williamsburg James City County Public Schools
All activities and events scheduled through the weekend have also been canceled. The SAT at LHS has been cancelled and will be rescheduled.

York County School Division
Due to the winter weather advisory, all York County School Division-sponsored activities, games and practices are canceled for the weekend of January 25-27, effective as of 2 p.m. Friday.

The College Board has canceled the SAT exams scheduled to take place at Grafton High School and Lafayette High School on Saturday, Jan. 26. The College Board will notify students registered to take the SAT of the rescheduled date.

 

BUSINESS, ARTS

The Institute for Dance – There will be no classes tonight (Friday, January 25) due to the weather. Class status for Saturday will be posted here at 8 a.m.

Iron-Bound Gym in New Town will close Friday at 5 p.m.

Virginia Living Museum – The VLM will close early – at 4 p.m. – Friday and delay Saturday’s opening until 11 a.m.

Virginia Regional Ballet – All classes for Friday afternoon and Saturday morning are canceled due to the snow. Classes will resume Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m.
