Recently, York County resident and long-time volunteer Josephine “Jo” Conese celebrated her 100th birthday! This momentous occasion was recognized during the recent Triad Ice Cream Social held at the Senior Center of York with Jo’s family and friends in attendance. She received a standing ovation, over 100 birthday cards and, of course, cupcakes and ice cream.
When asked about her secret to long life, Jo replied, “I always ate my vegetables and never drank or smoke.”
The daughter of a Pennsylvania coal miner, Jo cleaned homes for over 40 years before moving to New York and later to Virginia. A dedicated, 25-year volunteer at the Senior Center, where she continues to clean and help out the Peninsula Agency on Aging’s Dining Club program, Jo was recognized as one of York County’s 2016 Outstanding Volunteers.
The Senior Center of York offers a variety of programs for those aged 55 and above. The Senior Center is located at 5314 George Washington Memorial Highway in the Washington Square Shopping Center. For more information, please call the Senior Center at (757) 890-3444.
