Members of the Williamsburg Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution gathered near the Church on the Main on July 6, 2018 to lay wreaths in memory of patriots who died at the Battle of Green Spring on that date in 1781. Over ten years ago a large granite stone was placed by the Chapter near the remains of six Virginia and 22 Pennsylvania soldiers. Wreaths were presented by Bill Greaf, President of Williamsburg Chapter SAR; Dan Warren, President Gov. Thomas Nelson, Jr. Chapter SAR; and Elizabeth Greaf, 2nd Vice Regent Williamsburg Chapter DAR.
Colonial forces under Lafayette and Anthony Wayne had attempted to catch the rear guard of Cornwallis’ British army as it crossed the James River at the Jamestown ferry crossing and a battle took place – the last major battle leading up to the climactic battle of Yorktown.
The speaker was John Lynch II, a Chapter member whose patriot ancestor, Belfield Cave, fought at the Battle. Lieutenant Cave was a militiaman from Orange County, Virginia. John was accompanied by his son, John III, also a Chapter member.
